Truly easy/fast installation, good quality, excellent versatility in terms of doorway sizing
We have used these gates for years (I also have an older one that doesn’t have the smaller pet-door in the middle) and find them reliable and mulit-functional. Without the outer extensions, in the picture, this would be just the main center piece, without the two extensions on the sides, the “smallest” space it will fit is a narrow inner-doorway (think smaller half-bath door frame). The center piece also perfectly fits a traditional bedroom door frame (we have two of these installed on standard bedroom doors in our house). With the two extensions (included) it can fit even larger spaces (use one, or both).First-time setup may take a few minutes, just to make sure you get it right, but it really just takes a couple of minutes to install the door (I did it, 6 months pregnant). In short, there are long dowel/screws that stick into the outer edges, which brace it against the wall. Now, this is not flimsy, which was my original first-thought when I opened the first gate years ago. These are very sturdy, and really, really hold! They brace right against the wall. For your convenience, the box also contains some sticky rubbery pads that you can adhere to the wall, which should stop skid, if you have slippery walls (I don’t know why you would, but I’m not one to judge…lol). Another option, and this is important for top- or bottom-of-stairs, is to screw in a permanent bracket against the wall. The instructions note that this is for safety…I imagine that the bannister the dowel presses against could give over time, which may make the gate loose. But if this is not going at the top of stairs, installation is super-easy and fast, with an easy-to-open handle. The handle is different than our older one. Its larger, but I like it better. You simply lift it up on the non-hinged side (has a stapler-like action) and it pulls back the latch. For added security, there is a red “lock” button. If you press the handle all the way down, the red spring-loaded lever will catch. This is optional- if you simply don’t press the lever all the way down to snap it in, then you just raise the handle to open the gate the next time (we don’t snap the lock yet, as we just have the dogs for now). Once in the “lock” position, it requires that you slide the red lock backward, then you can lift the handle as normal to open the gate. Again, not required that you “lock” it, but a nice option. The gate is white metal, works very well, super-sturdy (including the wall braces). I’m satisfied with this purchase, and wouldn’t hesitate to buy this brand again!

Great to keeping dogs out of cat room
Very helpful for keeping dogs out of the cat room. Our dogs like to try to get to the litter, and this gate is perfect for that! Easy to open and sturdy.

Great Gate!
Exactly what we needed for our doorway to the basement. Easy to install and easy to operate, and so far has stayed in the doorframe very snugly despite a 6 and 9 yo slamming it open and closed. We did use a baby fridge safety latch to close the cat door to just small enough to keep our mini dachshund out but let our cats through to their litterboxes in the basement (the reason we got the gate to begin with). If you need to let cats through but keep small dogs out, you will probably need to rig the cat door to only open wide enough for a cat, but it is possible to do that if you’re inclined. I like this the best of all the gates we have!Update to answer (hopefully) some recent questions:I have this gate and it is used for both our mini dachshund and our youngest child. The sticker on my gate (purchased in the last 6 months) actually says it is a pet gate, but that WHEN used for children, the pet door should be closed and latched. Obviously this renders the gate less useful for those with crawling children or even small toddlers if the pet door use is the intended goal! That being said, I would guess that the maker is interested in limiting their liability should someone let a crawling/toddling infant get lodged in the pet door while unattended. In my opinion, the risk of that if you’re watching your crawling child is probably minimal (just my opinion of course-not a recommendation for anyone to use the pet door with tiny kids around). My kids are just out of their preschool years, but I think I would have used the gate anyway and been very alert to their proximity to the gate had I needed to do so when they were younger (we actually installed a regular cat door in our old house’s basement door for the cats to get to their litter box, but to keep our first born out of that stairwell and the basement. She never once tried to go through the cat door, though it was the same size as the pet door on the Carlson gate.)Another precaution with children involves not installing at the top of stairs (I think most pressure mounted gates are not 100% with toddlers when mounted at the top of a stairwell/staircase). Ours is installed at the top of the basement stairs with plenty of floor space between the gate and the first step, but I would not have risked that with a very young child. On the subject of the pet door dimensions (7″ wide x 10.5″ tall available space), we have a 9 lb. mini dachshund who is smaller than our 4 cats so we have to rig the pet door to only open wide enough for a normal size cat to squeeze-and I do mean squeeze- through. We actually use a zip-tie type child safety lock to restrict how wide the cat door can open, it takes care of keeping our 9 lb. dog from getting to the litter box.So, long and short is I do not think that the gate was intended ONLY to be a pet gate, but the use of the pet door is advised to be restricted with small kids (again probably due to the liability if the company doesn’t advise that). And as far as any difficulty opening the gate, I have found that when the gate is not mounted square in the door frame (it shifts after lots of openings/closing…stays firm but just not square), the gate latch becomes “off” and can be harder to open and close. Remounting/fixing the gate at the sides fixed the problem for us. Also, if anyone needs to know this-the pet door opens in both directions (though if you rig the pet door it stays open one way!). Okay, hopefully that answers questions people may have about the gate. :)Update 2-15-19: We have a regular span and extended span gate now and both are working well for our cats and youngest child. The extended span gate does slip over time so it needs to be re-aligned in the doorway at times but both gates have performed now for years and keep our younger kids out and our cats can get through easily. We do use baby rings to keep the pet doors open bc otherwise our younger kids would close the pet doors.

Works for larger dogs but not Frenchies
It’s a great gate and pretty easy to install, however my French bulldog can still fit through the opening for the cats unfortunately. So if you have a small ish dog this will probably not work to keep them out

We like that the gate swings in both directions. The cats loved the cat door put the dog figured out how to squeeze through. Didn’t look like she should fit, so be careful with that.

Genuinely can’t believe these can’t be bought in Australia, what a game changer!Keeps the kids out of the laundry area where the cat litter is and gives the cats a safe place to eat where they can’t be terrorised by a toddler who loves them.

Pros:-Lightweight-Easy to install-Gaps are small between the rods, works if your puppy is not too small (<2months)Cons:-Has a limitation with installing extensions (the opening to my kitchen is a bit bigger for the gate without extensions, and small for either of them to be installed). had to tape one of the smaller extensions on the other side to cover the gap-Mechanism for opening the door is a little flimsy, so have to be careful while handling itOverall a quality product to avoid your furry friends from entering places you don't want them to
