Reliable, firm, better quality than wood gates.
I bought this gate about a year and a half ago for my small dogs. It worked so well that I bought two of them.I first tried the cheaper wooden gates that you can get anywhere, the ones that have notches at specific intervals. The notches mean that the gate will only expand to exact intervals of about 1 centimeter long. But what if your doorway is in between one of those intervals? Then you’re out of luck! That gate won’t work. Or it will require some major muscle to jam it in tightly, which becomes a pain when you have to do this several times a day. That was the case with me and probably most people. You’re just lucky if it works for you in your situation.This gate doesn’t have the “notch” problem like the wooden gate I mentioned has. Instead, it lets you expand the gate right up against the door frame, and then you press down on the lever mechanism to increase the pressure and lock it in place. That means it should work anywhere, not just in special cases. And pressing down hard on the lever should not cause it to break – and with the right technique, it does not require tons of muscle power anyway.Also, once the lock is tucked into one of the slots that lock it into place, it’s locked. It won’t unlock by accident. To unlock it, you have to press down on it with a good amount of force and twist it out of the slot. That can be a little tough for an adult to do and to figure out at first. A small child or a pet won’t be able to figure out how to unlock it and won’t be able to overpower it and accidentally unlock it. That wasn’t the case with the wooden gates I mentioned above. All of those wooden gates I tried could easily become unlocked by accident or by simply vibrating the gate or kicking it.Some people have mentioned that their gate was too hard to use, that it required a lot of strength to push down on the lever and lock it into place. They’re right, and they’re wrong. Yes, if you expand the gate so it’s right up against the door frame before you begin pressing down on the lever, it will require a ton of force to press down on the lever to lock it in place. So here’s what you do instead: Expand the gate so that it’s right up against the door frame and then back off of it by a few millimeters before pressing down on the lever. The gate will lock tightly, but it won’t be very hard to press down on the lever. If it feels like you’re having to press too hard, just back off a bit and retry it. It’s no big deal. Five seconds of trial and error should be all that’s needed.I didn’t try mounting it to the wall with the included mount kit, so I can’t tell you if it’s good or bad for that purpose. The gate is fairly light in weight, so it’s easy to pick it up and position it into place when needed. And it results in a strong fitting, so I didn’t find that I needed to mount it.One other thing, it’s pretty easy for me to step over. I’m 5’10” tall. And others who were just 5’1″ tall have been able to step over it easily as well. It’s just tall enough to block toddlers and small to mid-sized dogs, but allows kids and adults to step over it without any problems.This gate is only about $10 more than a comparable wooden gate. Believe me, it’s worth it.

if you have a smaller home with a smaller staircase or smaller areas, these gates are great. I ordered two of them and they definitely deliver. My toddler is about 27 pounds and cannot break through the gate. He can hang on it, but does not break the gate.

great for the money
I’ve got gates all over my house to control rooms that pets can access. As a result of that, I must have picked up all of the common brands over the years. While I have some very nice wood and metal types, they were on the expensive side, so they aren’t an option when you have 5+ gates. And one was an accordion-style, and was much more of a pain to mount.That said, I’ve gotten most of the popular all-plastic style gates from the big box stores, and some of those have been quite expensive (given that it’s a plastic gate) as well. The issues with them tend to all be similar – problems with hinges that get slop in them, levers that are counter-intuitive, and portions of the gate that crack or fail under repeated use – typically something to do with the lever or locking system.The latest big box store plastic gate purchase both has a weird lever system, and the plastic hinges have so much slop in them that I had to reposition the ‘stoppers’ on the opposite side to both accommodate for the slop, and what appears to be actual warping of the entire gate frame.This North States gate does not seem like it will suffer from the same issues – the actual hinge portions are metal, and instead of a goofy new type of lever system, it has a simple swinging/descending type that both widens the gate and locks into one of 3 slots. So you can clearly see what is happening with the lever, and you can actually adjust the gap between the doorframe and the gate when open to your tastes, so if you want a barely snug fit or a very tight one, it will do both. The gate seems to be very rigid with its traditional external ‘bracketed/gusseted’ construction style.I think my only niggle is that the ‘stoppers’ attach with double sided tape, and then you can more securely fasten them with a single screw. The problem is that it’s hard to get them neatly aligned because of the tape & single screw, so it’s purely an aesthetic issue for anyone whose nitpicky. I only bring it up because I know this will bug some people.I’d give this gate 5 stars without hesitation if I knew for certain that it would still function the same a year from now as when it is new. I just can’t forecast that, and a material like plastic makes it a little harder to guess at. But for the price, the 4 stars is basically synonymous with 5. If it doesn’t hold up, it can be cheaply replaced. While I think that is kind of wasteful, some products just seem to provide the least aggravation if you realize that deliberate obsolescence is part and parcel with the design. At least you can recycle a broken one if your local municipal system allows for it.

The latch is haunted!
It is a good gate. However, I don’t know if it is just me but the latch sometimes is impossible to pull out when trying to open the gate. I had to put a small flat head screwdriver nearby to pull it out. Other times, it pops right out. I am in the twilight zone. I hate when something works fine and then doesn’t and I cannot figure out why!!

Works really well. We got this to keep our cat from clawing at the screen doors. It does the job. One reason we got it is that you don’t have to screw anything into the walls. I recommend it for pets, and if you want to move it around to different places.
